• Do you have friends who need connection as well? We'll see, how will it affect the best option available with you?
• You want to see different channels in different TVs? We will suggest the DTH provider who has most friendly pricing for multiple TVs specially if you consider long term savings.
So let's first figure out what all options we have and how each one of those fits into your requirement.
What are the available options?
There are multiple options available if you want to take DTH connection for multiple TVs. Depending on your needs there are various solutions available. So whether you have a house with 1 TV in 2-3 rooms each and you want to go for DTH connection in all rooms or you have a hotel which needs connection in different rooms, different solutions are available which reduces the cost burden and provides good flexibility as well. I’m going to explain various possible options in detail so that you can chose the one which best fits to your need.
1. Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU)
Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) installation service is a customized DTH service, where a single dish antenna can provide DTH connection to multiple households. Hence every household need not install individual dish antennas, as the individual set-top boxes will be linked to a large dish antenna.
While the size of individual DTH connection antenna is 60 cm, MDU antennas come in two sizes, 90 cm and 120 cm depending on the number of connection. For 10-12 connections 90cm antennas are used, for anything more than that, 120 cm antennas are used.
This service is applicable to high rise buildings, hotels and corporate. A single common dish antenna is installed for the building or the tower which cater to all the flats or rooms or offices through multi switches and amplifiers. However, each television set will get an individual set top box (STB).
MDUs are also very cost-effective for multi-television homes as under this scheme, one doesn't need to buy separate connections and can just connect the same amplifier to as many television sets.
The cost of installation of MDU antennas is anything between Rs 1200-1500 and is currently borne by DTH operators, who in return are getting multiple subscribers. Despite the common dish antenna being installed, each household will have the freedom to choose their own channel package.
It’s a very good option to explore if you live in an apartment and you want to subscribe for a particular DTH service along with some other neighbors of yours. This way all of you can come together and subscribe for this service without paying anything for the disc antenna. It saves you money and also provides a very good clarity because of large antenna size.
Advantages:
• Cost of MDU installation is paid by DTH provider
• Multiple TVs can be run with single installation
• Every subscriber has flexibility to chose different package
2. Multi Room Subscription
MRS is another option which is good if you have one house with multiple TVs and you want DTH in all of them. In MRS connection, each TV needs to be connected to a different set top box(STP) and all STP can use same antenna. In this case you’ll have the flexibility to run different channels on different TV sets. And the advantage also comes in terms of monthly savings because almost all DTH service providers give 50% off on subscription charges for 2nd TV. Some DTH providers also have a flat nominal fee structure for second TV which means you can enjoy all add-ons free of cost on second tv.
Advantages:
• 50% discount on subscription charges of 2nd TV
• Different channels can be seen on different TVs
• Discount on add-on packages for 2nd TV
3. Digilink
Digilink is the third option available for providing DTH connection to multiple TVS. This is good only if you want DTH connection in different TVs and you are fine with seeing same channels across TVs. So this option doesn’t have the flexibility of seeing different channels on different TV sets. Under such type of connection, same set top box is connected to different TVs through a hardware generally called as Digilink and you just need to pay the charges for this hardware (digilink costs approx. Rs.1800). You don’t have to pay anything for package or installation for second connection.
Advantages:
• No need to pay for package for 2nd TV
• No need to pay installation charges for 2nd TV
• Mulitple TVs can be run with single DTH connection
Conclusion:
Considering all of the options mentioned above, MDU stands out as the best option if you want multiple connections. The only constraint with this option is that MDU can be provided only if there are certain minimum numbers of subscribers. So if you stay in an apartment and you know few neighbors of yours who would like to go for DTH connection, go for MDU. Otherwise, chose multi-room-subscription option because it provides the flexibility of viewing different channels in different TVs and its equivalent to having separate connection in each TV. Last option you can explore is that of Digilink and you can go for it if cost is the major deciding factor for you and you are fine with compromising the flexibility of seeing different channels in different TVs.

You have addressed a very useful issue. What do you suggest for a 2/3 floors independant house ( not apartment) having total of 3/4 TVs in different rooms and each viewer wants to select the channel he wants to view ?
ReplyDelete@Jyoti:If owner of each house is different, you'll have to go for separate connections for each. But if there is just one owner having house with rooms on different floors, you can take one primary and three secondary connections under Multi-room subscription. This way you'll be able to see different channels on different tvs because each tv will have it's own set top box.And thus you'll also be saving on monthly charges under multi-room subscription scheme.
